Hettler Insurance Agency will be closed Monday, September 7, 2026 in observance of Labor Day. We’ll be back in the office Tuesday, September 8th at 8:30 a.m., ready to help with quotes, policy changes, certificates of insurance, and anything else your family or business needs heading into fall.

If you have a claim emergency over the long weekend, contact your carrier’s 24/7 claims line directly — the phone number is on your insurance ID card, on your Declarations Page, and on the carrier’s website. Claims never sleep, and neither do the carriers we place your coverage with.

What is Labor Day, and why does the U.S. celebrate it?

Labor Day is a federal holiday observed on the first Monday of September, and it honors the American worker — the everyday men and women whose labor built and continues to power this country. It’s a day to pause, fire up the grill, spend time with family, and quietly recognize the people who show up every day and get the work done.

A short history

The first Labor Day parade was held in New York City on September 5, 1882, organized by the Central Labor Union. About 10,000 workers took unpaid leave to march from City Hall to Union Square — a bold statement during an era of grueling 12-hour workdays and 7-day workweeks.

The idea spread quickly. By 1887, Oregon became the first state to make Labor Day an official public holiday, followed by Colorado, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and New York the same year. Congress made it a federal holiday on June 28, 1894, signed into law by President Grover Cleveland — just days after the deadly Pullman Strike, which had underscored the tension between American workers and the industries they served.

What makes Labor Day uniquely American

Most of the world celebrates workers on May 1 — International Workers’ Day, which grew out of the 1886 Haymarket affair in Chicago and has strong political overtones in many countries. The United States deliberately chose a different date, in early September, to create a distinctly American observance — one focused less on protest and more on recognition, rest, and the end-of-summer transition.

That’s why Labor Day feels different than most federal holidays. It’s the unofficial last day of summer. Kids head back to school. Football season kicks off. White clothing gets packed away (if you still follow that rule). And American families gather one more time for a cookout before autumn takes hold.

What Labor Day means for a family agency like ours

Hettler Insurance Agency has been family-owned and operated in Lubbock since 1992. Ron and Meghan Hettler, both CIC (Certified Insurance Counselors), work alongside a team that shows up every day for our neighbors — writing policies, defending claims, and answering the phone when other agencies won’t. Labor Day is our chance to say thank you to the whole Hettler team, and to all our clients and every West Texas worker, business owner, teacher, first responder, farmer, and rancher whose labor keeps this community running.

Enjoy the long weekend. Be safe on the road. See you Tuesday.
