A Local Insurance Agent Is Your Best Bet in the Age of AI

The insurance industry is buzzing about artificial intelligence. You are hearing about automated underwriting, AI claims handling, and even so-called fully autonomous insurance companies.

Recently, I tested one of these AI systems myself.

What happened tells you everything you need to know.

A Real Conversation With AI (And What It Got Wrong)

I asked an AI system about a company called “Dei Primus Holdings,” which supposedly created the world’s first fully autonomous insurance carrier called “LUCY.”

The AI responded confidently. It described the company, explained how the platform worked, and even referenced industry credibility.

There was just one problem.

The entire story was an April Fools’ joke.

The article literally stated in the middle of it:

“Editor’s Note: This was originally published on April 1. It was an April Fools Day joke.”

The AI missed it completely.

That’s Not a Tech Problem—That’s an Insurance Problem

This was not just a funny mistake. It exposed a much bigger issue.

AI can sound confident while being completely wrong.

And in insurance, being wrong is not harmless.

Insurance Is Not Just Information—It Is Judgment

Buying insurance is not like ordering a product online. It requires interpretation, experience, and real-world judgment.

  • Understanding exclusions
  • Interpreting contract language
  • Evaluating real-world risk
  • Applying context that is never written in the policy

For a deeper explanation of how liability actually works in everyday situations, see our article on what homeowners liability insurance really covers.

Example: Should You Turn in a Liability Claim?

An AI system may say:

Accident occurred → file a claim

A human agent may recognize:

  • The other party fled the scene
  • They may not want police involvement
  • They may never pursue a claim

Result: No claim should be filed.

That decision can protect your loss history and prevent unnecessary premium increases.

AI Does Not Understand People

Insurance is about people, not just data.

A licensed local agent understands:

  • Local attitudes toward lawsuits
  • Cultural differences
  • When a situation will escalate
  • When it will not

For example, some situations never develop into claims even when damage occurs. A system cannot recognize that nuance.

This is similar to how coverage gaps can arise when contracts transfer liability in ways most policies do not cover. Learn more in our article on umbrella liability and hidden coverage gaps.

The Legal Reality: AI Cannot Replace Licensed Agents

In almost every state, giving insurance advice requires a license.

To become licensed, an agent must:

  • Pass a state examination
  • Submit fingerprints and background checks
  • Verify identity and legal status
  • Be accountable for their advice

An AI system cannot meet any of these requirements.

This is why fully autonomous insurance models are not just impractical—they are legally impossible under current regulations.

What About Online Platforms and Call Centers?

Many online systems and offshore representatives operate without the level of accountability required of licensed agents.

They may:

  • Provide guidance without proper licensing
  • Follow scripts instead of understanding coverage
  • Miss important exclusions or endorsements

For business owners, this becomes even more dangerous. Contracts often require coverage that standard policies do not include. See our article on insurance requirements in contractor agreements.

The Risk of Getting It Wrong

Insurance is one of the few purchases where you do not discover a mistake until after a loss.

Common issues we see from online or AI-driven purchases include:

  • Incorrect liability limits
  • Missing endorsements
  • Uninsured contract obligations
  • Claims filed unnecessarily
  • Denied claims due to coverage gaps

What a Local Agent Actually Does

A local agent does far more than provide a quote.

  • Helps prevent mistakes before they happen
  • Explains what your policy actually covers
  • Identifies gaps you would not recognize
  • Advises whether a claim should be filed
  • Advocates for you during a claim

This is not automation. This is judgment.

AI Will Be Used—But It Should Not Replace Advice

AI will continue to improve efficiency in the insurance process.

  • Faster quoting
  • Better data processing
  • Streamlined workflows

But it lacks:

  • Common sense
  • Accountability
  • Real-world experience

Final Thought

If an AI system can confidently explain a fake company, ignore a clearly written disclaimer, and still sound believable, it should not be trusted to make decisions about your insurance coverage.

Work With Someone Who Knows the Difference

Before relying on online systems or AI-generated advice, speak with a licensed professional local insurance agent who understands your risks and your local environment.

Frequently Asked Questions ? (FAQ’s)

Q ? : Is it safe to buy insurance online without an agent?

A: Buying insurance online can be convenient, but it often leads to coverage gaps or incorrect policy selections because there is no professional guidance. A licensed agent helps ensure the policy matches your actual risks.

Q ? : Can AI replace a licensed insurance agent?

A: No. Insurance advice requires a licensed professional in most states. AI cannot meet licensing requirements, cannot be held accountable, and cannot provide legally recognized advice.

Q ? : Why is local knowledge important in insurance?

A: Local agents understand regional risks, legal environments, and community behaviors. This helps them provide more accurate advice and better claim guidance than automated systems.

Q ? : When should you not file an insurance claim?

A: You should not always file a claim immediately. Situations involving minor damage, unclear liability, or circumstances where the other party is unlikely to pursue compensation may be better handled without filing. A licensed agent can help you evaluate this decision.

Q ? : What are common mistakes people make when buying insurance online?

A: Common mistakes include choosing incorrect liability limits, missing important endorsements, failing to cover contractual obligations, and misunderstanding exclusions. These mistakes often lead to denied claims or uninsured losses.
